About Small Cap Funds
Small Cap is a SEBI equity category defined by a minimum 65% allocation to small-cap stocks — every listed company ranked 251st and below by full market capitalisation in AMFI's classification. This is by far the largest universe by company count of any market-cap category, spanning thousands of listed businesses ranging from established smaller companies to early-stage, thinly-traded names.
That breadth of universe is also the category's defining structural feature: stock selection matters enormously, since the small-cap universe includes companies with widely varying quality, governance standards and trading liquidity. Small-cap stocks as a group have historically shown the highest volatility of the three market-cap bands tracked on MFLens, along with the widest dispersion in outcomes between well-run funds and poorly-run ones — a pattern consistent with a universe this large and heterogeneous. Liquidity constraints are also more pronounced here than in Mid Cap or Large Cap: a fund managing a large asset base against a universe of less-liquid small-cap stocks faces different portfolio-construction limits than a similarly-sized large-cap fund would.
Small Cap sits at the opposite end of the market-cap spectrum from Large Cap, with Mid Cap and Large & Midcap occupying the space between them. Funds in this category tend to have shorter track records on average than Large Cap funds, since small-cap-dedicated fund launches accelerated more recently in the Indian mutual fund industry — which is part of why this category's 5-year rolling-consistency coverage, shown above, tends to be lower than the large-cap category's: many funds simply haven't existed for five full years yet, not a data gap.
