About Large & Midcap Funds
Large & Midcap is a SEBI equity category with a dual mandate: a minimum 35% allocation to large-cap stocks and a separate minimum 35% allocation to mid-cap stocks, held simultaneously — together accounting for at least 70% of the portfolio, with the remainder at the manager's discretion. It's the only market-cap category built around holding two segments in substantial size together, rather than concentrating in one band or spreading freely across all three.
That dual floor is what distinguishes it from its closest relatives. A pure Large Cap fund has no mandated mid-cap exposure; a pure Mid Cap fund has no mandated large-cap exposure; a Flexi Cap or Multi Cap fund can weight either segment however the manager or the SEBI-mandated split chooses. Large & Midcap instead guarantees meaningful, simultaneous exposure to both the stability generally associated with large, established companies and the differentiated growth characteristics generally associated with mid-sized ones — structurally positioning it between Large Cap and Mid Cap on most risk and return measures, without being purely either one.
Because the category requires managing two distinct market-cap sleeves within a single portfolio, sector and stock selection within each sleeve — not just the large/mid split itself — plays a significant role in how individual Large & Midcap funds differ from one another. The category is one of the more established blended-mandate categories by fund count and history, which shows up in the rolling-consistency coverage figures above. It sits as a bridge between the single-band categories (Large Cap, Mid Cap, Small Cap) and the fully flexible ones (Flexi Cap, Multi Cap).
