About Large Cap Funds
Large Cap is an equity category SEBI defines by a specific mandate: a minimum 80% allocation to large-cap stocks, defined as the 100 largest listed companies in India by full market capitalisation, re-ranked every six months by AMFI. This makes it the most concentrated-at-the-top category by design — the fund's return and risk profile are tied closely to the fortunes of India's biggest, most established, most liquid listed businesses.
That narrow mandate has a direct consequence for how these funds behave relative to other equity categories: with less room for a manager to deviate into mid- or small-cap names, a Large Cap fund's performance tends to track its benchmark index more closely than a Flexi Cap or Small Cap fund's does. This doesn't mean every Large Cap fund performs identically — stock selection within the top-100 universe, sector weighting, and cash levels still create real dispersion between funds — but the ceiling on how far a manager can deviate from a large-cap-only portfolio is structurally lower than in less-constrained categories.
Large-cap companies as a group tend to have longer operating histories, established market positions and more analyst coverage than mid- or small-cap companies, which is generally reflected in lower volatility for the category as a whole relative to Mid Cap or Small Cap. Large Cap is one of the older and more heavily tracked SEBI categories, which also means it tends to have among the longest return histories available for rolling-window analysis — reflected in this category's rolling-consistency coverage figures above. It sits alongside Flexi Cap, Multi Cap and Large & Midcap as a diversified equity category, differentiated from them purely by how tightly its market-cap allocation is defined.
