About Mid Cap Funds
Mid Cap is a SEBI equity category defined by a minimum 65% allocation to mid-cap stocks — companies ranked 101st to 250th in India by full market capitalisation in AMFI's twice-yearly classification. That places the category's universe between the established, heavily-covered top-100 large caps and the far larger, less liquid universe of small caps below rank 250.
Companies in this band are typically past their earliest growth stage but smaller and less established than large caps — often with shorter listed histories, less analyst coverage, and lower average trading liquidity than large-cap names. That combination tends to produce higher return dispersion and higher volatility for the category as a whole relative to Large Cap, alongside potential for structurally different growth rates as these companies scale. It also means portfolio liquidity management — how easily a fund can enter and exit positions without moving the price — plays a larger role in mid-cap fund construction than it does for large-cap funds.
Mid Cap sits between Large Cap and Small Cap on the market-cap spectrum, and is a distinct category from Large & Midcap (which mandates a minimum allocation to both bands simultaneously) and from Flexi Cap or Multi Cap (which spread across all three bands by mandate or discretion). Because rolling 5-year consistency data depends on sufficient historical NAV history, and mid-cap-focused fund launches have been more spread across recent years than large-cap funds, coverage for this category — shown above — can run lower than for the more heavily-tracked large-cap category, which reflects fund vintage rather than a flaw in the category itself.
