About Multi Cap Funds
Multi Cap is a SEBI equity category introduced in its current form in 2020 with a specific, fixed mandate: a minimum 25% allocation each to large-cap, mid-cap and small-cap stocks, together with the pre-existing minimum 75% overall equity requirement. Unlike Flexi Cap — which has no fixed split and is often described as Multi Cap's more flexible sibling — a Multi Cap fund must maintain meaningful, mandated exposure to all three market-cap bands at all times.
This fixed-split structure is the category's defining feature and the direct reason it exists as separate from Flexi Cap: SEBI created the rule specifically so that at least one category would guarantee genuine multi-cap diversification rather than leaving the large/mid/small mix entirely to manager discretion, after finding that many funds previously labelled "multi-cap" were in practice concentrated in large caps. That means a Multi Cap fund carries structurally more small- and mid-cap exposure — and the higher volatility historically associated with those segments — than a large-cap-tilted Flexi Cap fund would, even though both categories technically span the same three market-cap bands.
Because the category is comparatively newer in its current fixed-split form, most Multi Cap funds on MFLens have shorter track records than their Flexi Cap or Large Cap counterparts, which is reflected in this category's 5-year rolling-consistency coverage figures above — a function of fund vintage since the 2020 mandate, not a shortfall in the category's data quality. Multi Cap sits alongside Flexi Cap, Large Cap and Large & Midcap as one of the four broad-based diversified equity categories tracked here.
