About Value Funds
Value is one of SEBI's equity "strategy" categories (alongside Contra, which MFLens does not currently track separately), defined by a minimum 65% equity allocation combined with a mandated value-investing approach as the fund's stated strategy. Unlike the market-cap categories on this page, Value is defined by investment style rather than by which segment of the market it invests in — a Value fund can and typically does hold stocks across large, mid and small caps, selected specifically for trading at a discount to the manager's assessment of their fundamental worth.
That style mandate is what separates Value from every market-cap category here: two Value funds might hold completely different market-cap mixes from each other, yet both would be pursuing the same underlying philosophy of favouring statistically or fundamentally cheaper stocks — measured through metrics like price-to-earnings, price-to-book, or dividend yield relative to a company's history or peers — over faster-growing but more expensively-priced alternatives. This creates a return pattern that has historically tended to diverge from growth-oriented or momentum-driven segments of the market, sometimes performing differently from broad diversified categories like Flexi Cap during periods when growth-style stocks are in favour, and differently again when the market rotates toward cheaper, out-of-favour names.
Because a fund house is permitted to run only one value-oriented or contra-oriented equity scheme under SEBI's category rules, this is a comparatively smaller category by fund count than the market-cap categories — reflected in the fund count shown above. Value sits alongside the diversified categories (Flexi Cap, Large Cap, Multi Cap) as an option built around a specific investment philosophy rather than a specific market-cap mandate.
