About Multi Asset Funds
Multi Asset Allocation is a SEBI hybrid category defined by a specific diversification rule: a minimum 10% allocation to each of at least three distinct asset classes — typically equity, debt and a third asset such as gold, other commodities, or (for some funds) international securities. This is the only hybrid category on MFLens mandated to hold three or more genuinely different asset classes simultaneously, rather than blending just equity and debt.
That third-asset requirement is what separates Multi Asset from the other hybrid categories tracked here. Aggressive Hybrid, Balanced Advantage and Equity Savings all combine equity and debt in different proportions or with different flexibility, but none of them are required to hold a non-traditional asset class like gold. Adding that third leg is intended to introduce a return driver with different behaviour from both equity and debt cycles — gold, in particular, has historically tended to move somewhat independently of Indian equity markets over some periods, though that relationship isn't fixed or guaranteed.
Because fund houses have considerable discretion over exactly which three-plus asset classes to use and in what proportions above the 10% floors, Multi Asset funds can differ substantially from one another — some lean close to a traditional equity-debt hybrid with a small gold sleeve, while others run more evenly split allocations across equity, debt and commodities. This makes the category's return pattern, and the drivers behind it, less uniform across funds than in more narrowly-mandated categories. Multi Asset sits alongside Aggressive Hybrid, Balanced Advantage, Equity Savings and Arbitrage as one of the five hybrid categories tracked on MFLens.
