About Balanced Advantage Funds
Balanced Advantage — also known as Dynamic Asset Allocation — is a SEBI hybrid category with no fixed equity-debt band. Instead, the fund is mandated to manage its equity and debt exposure dynamically, typically using a model-driven or valuation-based framework that raises or lowers net equity exposure as market conditions change, subject only to the overall requirement that it remain a hybrid, not a pure equity or pure debt, scheme.
This dynamic-mandate structure is what separates Balanced Advantage from Aggressive Hybrid, the other major hybrid category tracked here: where Aggressive Hybrid holds a fixed 65–80% equity band at all times, a Balanced Advantage fund's actual net equity exposure can and does move over time as its underlying model responds to valuations, volatility, or other signals the fund house discloses in its strategy. Different fund houses use materially different models for this — some lean on price-to-earnings-based valuation bands, others incorporate trend or volatility signals — which means two Balanced Advantage funds can carry quite different net equity exposure at the same point in time despite sharing the same category label.
That model dependency is the primary source of dispersion between funds in this category, more so than stock selection alone, since the asset-allocation decision itself is often the dominant driver of a Balanced Advantage fund's returns over a given period. The category has grown substantially in fund count and assets industry-wide since dynamic-allocation strategies gained popularity, and carries meaningful 5-year rolling-consistency coverage as shown above. Balanced Advantage sits alongside Aggressive Hybrid, Multi Asset, Equity Savings and Arbitrage as one of the five hybrid categories tracked on MFLens.
